Why has Lee’s Summit Cares Character Council and the City of Lee’s Summit united to form a city of character?
Lee’s Summit CARES Character Council and the City of Lee’s Summit united to form a city of character in response to the growing decline of values in our society—evident in media that glorifies dishonorable behavior, corporate and political scandals, substance abuse, and the erosion of moral standards. By promoting positive character traits across the community, they aim to counteract these negative influences and inspire individuals to model integrity, accountability, and respect in their daily lives.
Lee’s Summit Cares Character Council, which was formed in 2003, and the City of Lee’s Summit have united with the different sectors of the community to counteract negative influences. Each sector supports the other by emphasizing selected character traits and principles and by focusing on character in conjunction with achievement.
(The) city, family, schools, health, law enforcement, parks and recreation, media, business, and faith segments of our community embrace the Character Council’s efforts. The result is a unified effort to strengthen our own character and that of our youth, families, neighbors and community.
Character is the result of inner strength, which inspires people to virtuous action no matter what the consequence may be. Character traits form character. When a goal is achieved, it is achieved by implementing those character traits. So, character traits are the seeds of character, and when they are exercised they result in honorable goals or achievements.

Ensure that each of the eight key sectors is consistently involved in nominating, recognizing, and promoting community members who exemplify the character trait of the month.
Celebrate Character Publicly
Use social media, local news, and city events to highlight individuals, families, and organizations who embody character traits — creating a ripple effect of inspiration and modeling.
Develop a Monthly Recognition Process
Maintain an effective monthly cycle of nominations, social features, and an in-person recognition moment leading up to the annual Mayor’s Character Breakfast.
Build Youth and Family Participation
Reinforce character values in homes and schools, making character development an everyday language for youth and families in Lee’s Summit.
